Nandi Hills is a hill station in Chikkaballapur district, about 60 km north of Bengaluru. It stands 1,478 metres above sea level and is famous for its sunrise views. Visitors also come to see the old fort, Tipu’s Drop and Yoga Nandeeshwara Temple. The hill was earlier called Nandidurga.

A trip to Nandi Hills can be a short morning drive or a full day out. The hilltop has viewpoints, walking paths and historic sites. At its foot, Nandi village has the much older Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple. Entry is generally listed from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. September to February is the most popular time to visit, though the views depend on the day’s weather.

Nandi Hills Location and Distance from Bengaluru

Nandi Hills is in Chikkaballapur district, Karnataka. It is outside Bengaluru city. The distance of about 60 km is a broad figure from Bengaluru; a trip from South Bengaluru will be longer than one from the northern parts of the city.

Drivers commonly take NH 44 towards Chikkaballapur before turning onto the Nandi Hills road. The final stretch climbs through bends to the hilltop entrance. Karnataka Tourism gives a usual drive time of 1½ to 2 hours from Bengaluru, subject to traffic. Kempegowda International Airport is roughly 35–40 km from the hill.

Chikkaballapur Railway Station is about 9 km from Nandi Hills. Buses can get travellers to Chikkaballapur, but a separate road ride is needed for the hill. Anyone planning to arrive at 6:00 a.m. should arrange that last part in advance.

Nandi Hills Timings, Ticket Price and Parking Charges

The main Karnataka Tourism visitor guide lists 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. as the Nandi Hills entry hours. It gives an approximate entry fee of ₹10–₹20 per person. Parking is charged separately. These amounts may change, so the price shown at the entrance is the one to use on the day.

Visitor Charge Weekday Guide Weekend Guide
Entry per person About ₹10–₹20 About ₹10–₹20
Two-wheeler parking ₹30 ₹50
Car parking ₹60 ₹100
Heavy vehicle parking ₹150 ₹250

The parking figures are listed in the state tourism guide. Entry controls can also change for a crowded date or a local event. Check the day’s notice before making a long trip, especially if the visit depends on sunrise.

Nandi Hills Sunrise: What Time Should You Go?

The sunrise viewpoint is the busiest spot on Nandi Hills in the early morning. People gather there to see the light spread over the plains below. In cooler months, mist may sit over the lower ground. On other days, cloud can hide the sunrise altogether.

The gate is listed to open at 6:00 a.m., while sunrise time changes through the year. Reaching the gate before it opens does not mean visitors can go up early. Check the sunrise time for your travel date, then allow for parking and the walk from your vehicle. A weekday can make that walk easier than a crowded weekend morning.

Best Places to Visit in Nandi Hills

Nandi Hills has more to see than one sunrise point. The main stops bring together views, temples and the hill’s fort history.

Tipu’s Drop

Tipu’s Drop is a cliffside viewpoint on the hill. The Chikkaballapur district guide describes a drop of about 60 metres. It looks out over the land below and is linked to stories from Tipu Sultan’s time. Stay within the marked visitor area when taking photographs, particularly if you are with children.

Yoga Nandeeshwara Temple

Yoga Nandeeshwara Temple is on Nandi Hills itself. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the hill’s main historic sites. Visitors can pair a temple stop with a walk around the hilltop rather than leaving as soon as the sunrise is over.

Nandi Fort Walls and Gates

Nandi Hills was once a fortified place. Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan expanded its defences, building on an older fort. The walls and gateways help explain why the hill mattered: from this height, it was possible to watch the surrounding land. Take time to see these remains instead of treating the hill only as a viewpoint.

Amrita Sarovar

Amrita Sarovar is an old reservoir associated with the hill fort. It once served a practical purpose by holding water on the hill. Today, it adds a different stop to a walk through Nandi Hills. It is useful for visitors who want to see a little of the site’s history between the main viewpoints.

Nehru Nilaya

Nehru Nilaya is a historic guest house on Nandi Hills. The Chikkaballapur district administration notes that it was the venue for the second SAARC summit in 1986. It is another reminder that Nandi Hills has been used for more than leisure trips. Access to buildings may differ from access to the surrounding visitor area.

Places to Visit Near Nandi Hills

Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple is in Nandi village at the base of the hills. It is not the same temple as Yoga Nandeeshwara at the top. The complex is known for its old stone architecture and its Bhoga Nandeeshwara and Arunachaleshwara shrines. It is a good second stop if the hilltop visit ends by late morning.

Muddenahalli is another stop for visitors interested in local history. It is the birthplace of Sir M. Visvesvaraya, and his former home is now a museum. Drivers coming through the airport side may also plan a separate visit to Devanahalli Fort. These are places around the wider Nandi Hills region, not attractions on the hilltop.

Nandi Hills Weather and Best Time to Visit

September to February is usually the best period for a Nandi Hills trip. Mornings are cooler, so walking around the summit is easier. A light layer can help on a cold or windy morning. Mist can make the scene memorable, but it may also block the long views people came to see.

The slopes turn green during the monsoon. Rain can make the hill road slippery, so the drive needs more care. In summer, leave early and carry water if you plan to walk around. Nandi Hills stays cooler than many lower areas, but an afternoon visit is still different from a cool sunrise trip.

Can You Stay at Nandi Hills?

Yes. KSTDC’s Hotel Mayura Pine Top is on Nandi Hills. The state tourism operator lists 17 rooms and asks guests to check in before 6:00 p.m. That timing matters because the hill’s public entry hours are limited. Room rates and availability depend on the travel date, so an overnight stay needs more planning than a day visit.

Visitors can also look for stays in the wider Chikkaballapur area. Check the property’s actual location before booking. A stay described as “near Nandi Hills” may still need a drive to the hill gate.

Nandi Hills Latest Update: Ropeway Status in 2026

A ropeway has been proposed for Nandi Hills. The Chikkaballapur district administration published a land acquisition notice for the project in October 2025. As of this October 2026 update, that notice does not establish that a ropeway is open or give visitors a confirmed opening date. Plan to use the existing road to reach the hill.

Sattva Ekatra: Plots with Road Access to Nandi Hills

Sattva Ekatra is a plotted development in Thippapura Village, Doddaballapura Taluk. Nandi Hills is a road trip from the project, at roughly 30–35 km depending on the route. The two places are in different districts: Sattva Ekatra is in Bengaluru Rural, while Nandi Hills is in Chikkaballapur. Anyone planning a visit from the layout should use its Thippapura address to check the full drive.

The project covers 24.36 acres and has 502 residential plots in its project details. Regular plots range from 600 to 1,800 sq. ft. Sattva Ekatra launched in September 2026 and holds Karnataka RERA registration PRM/KA/RERA/1250/301/PR/180926/008945. Its proposed possession date is 29 March 2029. The link with Nandi Hills is access to a day-trip destination; the plots are not located on or beside the hill.
